After leaving school it was always my ambition to join the army. At school I was more of a hands-on sort of guy, enjoying the more practical/physical subjects and I felt that the army was the way forward for me in what it had to offer. Coming from a small town in Devon, I knew there was a big wide world out there and I wanted to explore it. Joining the army would help me fulfil that ambition.
I joined a Corps that offered so much to the soldiers: education, qualifications and the opportunity to get involved in anything you wanted to turn your hand to. Once I'd finished my basic training in sunny Pirbright, I was sent to my first unit and I've never looked back!
I've now reached the top of my game, from a Private Soldier to the most senior Soldier i.e. Regimental Sergeant Major. I have loved my time serving in the army, jumping out of planes, working in the amphibious role and teaching our future soldiers whilst deploying on several operations. After 24 years’ service in the British Army and fulfilling my ambitions and so much more, I feel the time has come for me to channel my energy into something new.
In the past 12 months myself and my partner (Victoria) decided to start a Coffee Company aptly named Down the Range Coffee Company. From experience, I've tasted The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from various coffee blends and whilst serving in the army I understand the difficulties people have had making ‘brews’ in tough locations and without the right equipment. We decided to bring an incomparable coffee to the market with durable equipment that is tough enough to survive any situation.
Serving over two decades in the army has certainly made me appreciate a decent coffee. With this in mind we produced 3 incomparable blends. A coffee within the workplace brings people together, it boosts morale and gives us the opportunity to catch up. There's nothing better than a decent coffee to finish off a family meal and a good cup of coffee can bring a smile to your face if you're out on the ground.
I've served on several operations and having the right equipment is everything. The kit must be small, it must be light, and it must be strong enough to survive! At Down the Range Coffee Co. we specialise in all of the above (coffee and equipment), ensuring you get a delicious, hot coffee no matter where you are or what you are doing. Down the Range Coffee Co. has now linked up with some well recognised brands to give you the best of the best!
We've thoroughly enjoyed the start of our new venture and we cannot thank everyone enough for their support so far. Transitioning from a long military career to a civilian one has been an exciting challenge and we are embracing it with both hands. Hard work, enthusiasm and the will to succeed will help us realise our dream!
Victoria has been instrumental in helping to build the beginnings of a new chapter for us. She has encouraged, supported and pushed the business in the right direction. She's been my sounding board when needed and her artistic flair has been invaluable. Without her none of this would have happened.
